After completing Primary Training, students are required to successfully complete at least two semesters of advanced training. The maximum advanced training allowed is four semesters or 32 points. Students may only take a maximum of 8 points of advanced training each semester, with the sole exception of an internship, which may be taken in the same semester as advanced studio. Transfer students’ requirements may differ depending upon credits accepted from their previous school.
Advanced studios are designed to help students either progress into a deeper understanding of a particular technique, to add new skills, or to provide further performance experience. These options allow students to assess their own progress after primary training and to set personal goals for their remaining time before graduation. Meetings with Primary Studio faculty and department advisors can be helpful in making these decisions. There is also an Advanced Studio Information Fair held in March, prior to fall registration. Watch for notices on the "must read" bulletin board at 721 Broadway.
Students are eligible to enroll in Advanced Studio only after successfully completing four semesters of primary training. They may either remain in their Primary Studio for advanced training, move to another Primary Studio that offers an advanced "transfer track," or enroll in a "stand alone" Advanced Studio that does not offer primary training–such as The Classical Studio or Stonestreet Film & Television. Please note that many advanced studios require a separate audition or interview for admittance.
Another advanced training option is to take a professional internship for credit.
In the junior and senior years you should consider how you want to employ the technical and intellectual facilities you have acquired in Primary Training. Advanced training can:
- help you progress into a deeper understanding of a particular technique
- introduce you to new skills
- provide more extensive performance experience
Whether you continue at your Primary Studio or study elsewhere, your advanced training should provide an opportunity for you to assess your own progress after primary training and to set personal goals for the remaining time before graduation.
Current Students of the Department of Drama must:
- Additional Professional Training include Advanced Studios, Internships, some Study Abroad options, and advanced components of Primary Studios.
- 8 points maximum per semester
- A passing grade below a C will count as Elective Credit.
